چکیده

Betulinic acid is a naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpenoid and has been shown to exhibit a variety of biological activities including inhibition of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), antibacterial, antimalarial, antiinflammatory, anthelmintic and antioxidant properties. This article reports a survey of the literature dealing with betulinic acid related biological properties that has appeared from the 1990's to the beginning of 2003. A broad range of medical and pharmaceutical disciplines are covered, including a brief introduction about discovery, phytochemical aspects, organic synthesis, anti-HIV and cytotoxic mechanisms of action. Various structural modifications carried out and their biological and pharmacokinetic profiles are also incorporated.

Antiparasitic evaluation of betulinic acid derivatives reveals effective and selective anti-Trypanosoma cruzi inhibitors.

Betulinic acid is a pentacyclic triterpenoid with several biological properties already described, including antiparasitic activity. Here, the anti-Trypanosoma cruzi activity of betulinic acid and its semi-synthetic amide derivatives (BA1-BA8) was investigated. The anti-Trypanosoma cruzi activity and selectivity were enhanced in semi-synthetic derivatives, specially on derivatives BA5, BA6 and ...

Recent studies on betulinic acid and its biological and pharmacological activity

Betulinic acid (3β-hydroxy-lup-20(29)-en-28-oic acid, BA), a pentacyclic lupane-type triterpene, is widely distributed in the plant kingdom (Mukherjee et al., 2006; Fulda, 2008). Johann Tobias Lowitz isolated the reduced form of BA from plants in 1788 and found that it was a prominent outer-bark constituent in white-barked birch trees (Bag and Dash, 2011). BA has a wide range of biological and ...

Design, synthesis and biological evaluation of novel betulinic acid derivatives

UNLABELLED BACKGROUND Tumor, is one of the major reason for human death, due to its widespread occurrence. Betulinic acid derivatives have attracted considerable attention as cancer chemopreventive agents and also as cancer therapeutics. Many of its derivatives inhibit the growth of human cancer cell lines by triggering apoptosis. With this background, we planned to synthesize a series of be...
